How often do you stand in salaah but your mind wanders… you’re reciting verses of the Qur’an that you’ve memorised when you suddenly remember that text you were supposed to send, what you’re going to cook tomorrow, and even the designs on the prayer rug suddenly become entertaining.
Or what about when the adhaan goes but you’re busy with something and you promise yourself that you’re getting up to pray in 5 minutes..yet almost an hour passes and you’re still engrossed in futile worldly activities.
Have you ever considered that your salaah is not having the effect it is supposed to have on you and your life because you’re not giving it its due justice?
When I think about the people of the past and their devotion to salaah it makes me ashamed of myself.
It is said that one of the companions of the Prophet (S.A.W) needed an amputation. He requested that it be performed while he performed salaah.
How did they attain that level of inner peace and satisfaction that salaah should give us? And I wonder, is it possible to reach that level too…
In order to attain this, we need to ponder on our approach to salaah. Do you pray because you have to, because everyone else around you does or because you need to get it done and out of the way?
We need to pray out of sincere love. Because we want to. Because Allah has granted us so many favours and blessings, He has done for us more than we can fathom. He deserves to be the most worthy of our love over everyone and everything.
Change your outlook and intention towards salaah. Try to understand the meaning of the words you are reciting. Feel the strength behind the words ‘Allahu Akbar’ – Allah is great, when you raise your hands in submission, leaving behind all worldly thoughts. Fight to concentrate as Shaytaan will try to steal every sweet moment of concentration to distract you. Imagine humbling yourself before the Lord of the heavens and the earth. Imagine your sins falling away in prostration.
Perform Salaah because you love it and you yearn for the pleasure you find in it. Come to salaah with a feeling of hope ..hope for Allah’s mercy and forgiveness.
May Allah guide us and grant us the ability to perform every salaah perfectly. May He let our salaah be a means of salvation on the day of Qiyamah and may He keep us steadfast on Deen. Aameen.
